Runecrafting

Runecrafting (RC) is the skill of creating runes from essence. RC is notorious for having some of the slowest experience gains in the game however there can be a decent demand for runes and a generous profit to be made for those who choose to train it.

Crafting Runes

In the Runecraft skill, the player can create runes to be used with the Magic Skill by binding the magical energy from the various rune altars into essence to create their respective runes. Essence comes in two varieties, Normal and Pure Essence. Depending on the rune being crafted Pure Essence may be required.

Talismans/Tiara's

Ironmen in particular may have trouble finding talismans if for some reason they cannot use the Abyss. Below is a list of common, easy sources for each talisman.

To create a Tiara, you must take a Tiara (level 23 crafting) to the respective runecrafting altar and use the tailisman on the altar to create the tiara.

Multiple Runes

As a player's Runecraft level increases, they can make more runes. However, they only earn experience based on the amount of essence they use. The number of runes made from the essence in a player's inventory in an action that gains a level is determined by the player's level before the runecrafting action. Unlike in OSRS, the levels at which multiple runes are created is only for a guarantee, however, you will produce closer to the next available tier (if any) before you reach the level of guarantee, however it is RNG based on how many exactly you will craft. Example: You have 88 Runecraft, 3 levels short of guaranteed 2x Natures, however you will produce closer to 2x natures than 1x per essence crafted, at 91 you will always produce 2x natures.

Combination Runes

Members have an extension to Runecraft, which is the ability to combine two runes into one item.

To craft combination runes, a player needs to take existing runes that are one half of the combination, with a matching talisman (not a tiara), along with an equal amount of pure essence to the altar which comprises the other half of the combination. Use the existing runes or the talisman for the existing runes on the altar. This has a 50% chance of success per rune, and any failed runes are simply destroyed. The talisman will be consumed regardless of how many runes are made. Players can wear a binding necklace to have a 100% chance of success instead.

The player may use the Lunar spell Magic Imbue to make combination runes without needing the opposing talisman.

The Abyss is an area of Abyssal Space that contains rifts created by the Zamorak Magical Institute with which they directly access the runic altars without the need for a talisman, with the exception of the Astral and ZMI Altars. Accessing this area of the Abyss requires completion of the miniquest Enter the Abyss.

The Abyss consists of two rings: a dangerous outer ring in a multicombat area and a safe inner ring with rifts leading to the runic altars. Aside from the aggressive abyssal creatures inhabiting it, players who enter the Abyss will have their prayer points drained to 0 and be immediately given a skull.

The benefits to the Abyss are that it allows for access to all altars (even some which are unassessable otherwize such as the Death and Blood Altar), and allows you to craft runes at approximatly 2,500 ess crafted per hour.

Training for Money

If you are interested in training the skill but also want to make a good profit, here are a few tips:

Runes to Avoid Crafting

Runes to Craft

Essentially all runes Nature rune and above will net you a profit vs the cost of Pure Essence. Things to note are

Training for Experience

If you do not care about money and want to focus on soley experience, there are a few options that I would recommend.

Comparisons

Rule of Thumb is expect about 2,500 Essence crafted through the abyss using all 4 pouches and an abyssal lurker. Graahk is faster than Abyss, FOG gloves offer some of the best exp per hour although with a reduction in profit. ZMI and Combo runes will give you cancer.

Method Full Trip Time Essence Crafted per trip Exp per trip (5x) Trips per hour (Rounded Down) XP per hour (5x) Pros Cons
Abyss - Death Runes 1:25:00 61 3050 42 128,100 Decent profit, approximatly 2500 essence crafted an hour. Lower XP than other methods listed
Abyss - Water Runes (FOG Gloves) 1:20:00 61 3480 45 156,600 Higher XP than Deaths, ability to use regular essence vs pure Money is break even due to use of FOG gloves
Earth Runes (FOG Gloves) 0:56:00 61 3965 63 249,795 Highest XP in the game. Ability to use regular essence vs pure Major loss due to using FOG gloves
Nature runes (Graahk) 1:00:00 54 2430 59 143,370 Faster xp and money than Deaths and Abyss natures Graahk Pouches are time consuming to obtain.
ZMI 1:10:00 45 3600 (Approximate at 93 RC) 50 180,000 Decent XP for essence crafted Will give you cancer and Shadow94 level burnout long term
Lava Runes 0:53:00 45 2250 67 150,750 Decent XP for essence crafted Requires Magic imbue, Binding Necklace, Very Click Intensive. No profit
